Stewards of the Mystery

Jim Leffel
Colossians 1:24-2:5

Christian community is comprised of individuals who are stewards of God's truth. Christ has accomplished our greatest need, but we now have a mission to carry out in building His kingdom on earth. Serving God involves a process of transformation of ourselves and others, freedom from the power of sin, and a focus on grace given to us by God through Christ.

Building Quality Christian Community

Gary DeLashmutt
John 17:21-23

Living at peace in quality Christian community is the first way Paul urges believers to live their lives so that the Father is commended to the watching world. This is done through relating to others with humility, patience, and gentleness. God gives both the motivation and example to relate to others this way because He is a Community of love relationships ? the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Besides being a light to the watching world, living in a community also brings joy. We were created to experience community with one another in the community of God.

8 Essential Attitudes (Part 2)

Dennis McCallum
Hebrews 13:3-4

Christians should remember those who are ill-treated and are undergoing suffering, as they are all a part of the body of Christ. Christians are instructed to honor marriage that is within God's design - a heterosexual, monogamous relationship. This type of relationship is increasingly rare in our society, but glorifies God and should stand distinct in our world. Those who are non-married should develop skills to be effective in marriage, and those within marriage should have a high priority on creating a God-honoring marriage.

The Last Supper

Dennis McCallum
Exodus 12:3-9

Jesus' last supper brings up the importance of the New Testament practice of communion. Jesus' call to eat the bread and drink the wine was foreshadowing his ultimate payment of sins on the cross. Today, communion is a New Testament practice for believers to share in fellowship and remember the importance of Jesus' work on the cross. Focusing on what God did on the cross can lead us to a greater appreciation for Jesus' sacrifice and also the unique bond between all believers through the Holy Spirit.

Serving Love and Sexuality (Part 1)

Dennis McCallum
Mark 10:1-9

When the focus of sexuality is servant love, we understand that sex is highly intimate and thus can be highly damaging, so we want to listen to God's perspective on what will be the most fulfilling. The key to success in sexual relationships is that it is centered around God. When centered on God, sexuality is able to be freeing and highly unifying as both parties are secure in their position in Christ and can look to serve one another out of God's love, rather than needlessly taking from one another. For those not in marriages, developing our ability to give love in Christian community is a great starting point.

Sexual Intimacy in Marriage

Jim Leffel
1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

Paul teaches the Thessalonians about two biblical themes of sexuality: 1) the melding of persons; and 2) self-giving love. God's intent and purpose are radically different than the culture's, then and now. His way is better. Paul contrasts our culture's view that sexuality is for the benefit of self versus God's view that it is to benefit the spouse. God's way of sexuality mirrors His character and brings intimacy to the marriage relationship.\r\n

Joy and Spiritual Unity

Jim Leffel
Philippians 2:1-3

Under great stress you learn more about who you really are. Suffering brings out critical weaknesses and also reveals your true priorities. Unity is essential in the midst of suffering. As Christians, we have a corporate identity in Christ and each other, through the Holy Spirit. Paul explains to the Philippians what spiritual unity looks like in every day life.

What is the Church?

Jim Leffel
Romans 12:3-10

God's church is not an institution but an organic community forged by real spiritual unity given by the Holy Spirit. Described as a body, the church is an interdependent community where each member is needed for the church to flourish and grow in love. As we step out in faith and look to meet the needs of others, God is able to be glorified in His church as the church reflects God's love within the church and outside it.

Exchanging the Old Self For the New (Part 5)

Dennis McCallum
Ephesians 4

Within conflict resolution, there are two ways to negotiate: competitive or cooperative. We must prepare beforehand what we want to say concerning the conflict we're in, affirm the importance of the relationship with the other person, understand the interests of the others, and look for solutions for the conflict. In the case of continued disagreement, we can humbly re-assess the situation to continue to preserve the unity we have in Christ. Developing skills within conflict resolution is good for continued unity and glorifying God.
