Paul writes to Timothy as his own life is coming to an end. Timothy was a fearful young leader who was facing many obstacles; by human standards, he was hopelessly unfit for this line of work. Every believer in Christ can identify with Timothy in being unable to effectively serve God of their own effort. Christian workers can have confidence despite everything because of what God has given us: power, knowledge of His Will, calling of us into ministry, and His Spirit in us.

Is following Christ worth the suffering involved? Confident expectation and hope in eternal life is what empowers believers to willingly give all so that more might experience the grace of God. We can prepare to suffer by living with spiritual integrity - looking to grow to become more like Christ.

Faith and love are paired in the writings of Paul to communicate the personal confidence in God paired with an others-centered outworking of this belief. The strategy that naturally comes from these truths is personal discipleship, this requires dependence on God to transform us. God will deliver wisdom, strength, and confidence to His followers.

Timothy has been called to suffer for the gospel. The entire world is in a spiritually divided state, active trust in God means entering into this spiritual battle. Paul illustrates our role as servants of God in the descriptions of a soldier in spiritual war, an athlete competing for the prize, and a farmer toiling in the field.

Spiritual warfare is fierce and suffering is guaranteed, the Christian must understand that God has already secured victory. Following Christ is difficult, we face discouragement and doubt; we risk becoming despondent and deserting this whole call altogether. A healthy life of faith remembers and calls to mind God's faithfulness. Remembering God's past provision gives us hope for the future, so that we can live in the present.

Timothy's church was facing a unique form of false teaching that combined mystical Judaism with popular Greek philosophy, and Paul commanded Timothy to handle the word of God accurately as a result. This command is not just relevant for Timothy though - modern believers face similar teaching and must be able to accurately interpret and explain God's Word to those questioning the Christian faith. These skills can be developed through diligence and intentional study of the Bible, and when they are combined with personal experience of the Holy Spirit, Christians can thrive and serve others more effectively.

God's standards for leadership in the church are centered around godly character. Spiritual gifts, ministry skills, and calling are useless in the life of a leader without character, and God wants to integrate who we are with how we live as we grow in our relationship with Him. This integration happens only when Christians understand the proper motivation for change and pursue a life of others-centered, sacrificial love. God also calls Christian leaders to be patient and humble in correcting people in their lives who are seeking change since they too are learning what it looks like to follow God. Towards the end of human history, humanity will turn towards selfishness and a growing coldness towards other people. This trend will produce religion that is centered around meeting people's felt needs rather than the truth, but unfortunately this type of religion will not relieve the legitimate guilt that people feel or meet people's true relational needs. Authentic Christianity, however, features direct revelation from God through the Bible, and this revelation is both powerful and accessible. All Christians are capable of learning the truths of the Bible and becoming convinced of its validity and usefulness through personal interaction with God and study. Toward the end of human history, people will become increasingly selfish and concerned with satisfying their own desires. Spirituality, then, will follow suit and feature doctrines that are centered on increasing self-esteem, pleasure, and prosperity. This new spirituality will even redefine truth as individual and validated by one's own feelings instead of external sources. The Bible's message of forgiveness only through Jesus Christ, however, is the message that can best meet people's needs, and Christians should boldly preach, declare, and apply God's Word to the watching world.

As Paul's life comes to a close, he reflects on his past, present, and future in his last letter to Timothy. \r\nPaul's past demonstrated faithfulness to what God entrusted to him, and in the present Paul continued to live a life characterized by sacrifice for God. Lastly, Paul looked forward to the crown of righteousness that God promised him in eternity. All of these reflections enabled Paul to fulfill his ministry, and modern Christians can likewise have the same hope and motivation to be faithful to Christ in their own lives.

Spiritual leaders look at difficult circumstances in their lives and ask how God is working in the situation to further His work and provide for them personally. Instead of hiding their weaknesses that are exposed by circumstances, spiritual leaders are vulnerable about their struggles and depend on God's Spirit to make them adequate to serve others. Lastly, spiritual leaders have trust in God's sovereign plan for them, and they seek God's glory above their own. These qualities create an opportunity to leave a powerful legacy for generations of Christians to follow.
