Romans 10:3-11:29

Even in the Old Testament, God has not wanted to relate to people through works, but instead through grace and faith! The nation of Israel thought that they could keep the law themselves. And, though they have been God's chosen people throughout all of human history, He chose to stop working through them for a time because they rejected His grace and subsequently, hardened their hearts. This does not mean that God has forgotten or rejected the Jews, He will still carry out His promises to the Jews after the Church Age. God is continuing to execute His vast, eternal plan of rescue and is choosing to use anyone and everyone who wants to following Him.

Becoming Who You Are

Romans 6:1-19

In Adam, we were slaves to sin and alienated from God. Once we are in Christ, we have a new identity. Not only is it essential to know what this new identity is, it is just as important to learn to apply these truths to ourselves. As we begin to look at ourselves the way God looks at us and present ourselves to Him with this new identity in view, we can depend on Him to begin powerfully transforming us into the image of Christ.

The Good News

Romans 1:1-17

The Good News of the Bible is that we can have a close, personal relationship with the God of the universe. We have to come to Him on His terms though, not on our own. God's terms are just that we have faith in the good news that He sent His son to die as payment for our sins on the cross. Jesus' life and death was predicted by several sources hundreds of years before he walked on the earth. The Gospel is the power of God. It's the only thing that makes us right with God and is accomplished from start to finish by faith.

The Attraction of the Gospel

Paul describes the Good News that the Colossians know as grace, which has the power to change lives. He lists characteristics of this grace in the believers' lives as faith, love, and hope. Faith is our reality, love is our call, and hope is our future. These things attract others to Christ and make faith real.

Expanding the Threshold of Faith

As we begin to follow God, He desires to deepen our faith and trust in Him. As we choose to believe His Word, we also receive inner revelation and ultimately an experience that allows us to deepen our trust as we live out of His Word. An active faith that is based on God's Word and backed up by action produces a more tested faith, enabling us to live more Christ-centered lives as we pursue Jesus.

Fruit of the Holy Spirit includes a growing interest and capacity for goodness, kindness, gentleness, and faithfulness. Goodness implies that we are working to meet others needs as a way of life, as we understand the immense value God has for them. Christians excelling in kindness and gentleness are rich in empathy towards others and are often sought out by others during tough times. Those who are faithful will engage in God's work based on facts and faith, in spite of how they might feel in the present moment and are very reliable in the lives of others.

Hebrews 11:13-40

The lives of Joseph and Moses reflect lessons for those eager to serve God. The life of Joseph was one of intense suffering while simultaneously trusting that God would ultimately provide for him, despite being imprisoned, sold into slavery by his family members, and being forgotten. During Moses' life, he gave up privilege to serve alongside God's people despite not immediately seeing success. Both Joseph and Moses had to encounter immense times of waiting on God, something that helps cultivate trust and dependence on Him to come through.

Abraham: Man of Faith

Hebrews 11:6-19

Abraham's live was exemplified in his faith in God. It was first seen as he left his secure home in Ur, and then deepened as he was forced to wait for God to fulfill His promise even while he was very old in age. It was epitomized as he was willing to trust God and sacrifice his son, Isaac. In each instance, God allowed Abraham to wait on Him, in order to cultivate a deeper trust and dependence on God to fulfill what He promised. The same pattern can be helpful for Christians today as they try and deepen their faith.
